President’s Address on COVID-19 Pandemic

Dear fellow interior practitioners, educators, project managers, students, and all other stakeholders in the Interior design industry, I’m writing to you with a heavy heart as we know most of us have suffered one way or another in this difficult period as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Being the main industry representative body for the interior design professions in Singapore, the Society of Interior Designers, Singapore (SIDS) is taking up the challenge to do our part as a NGO to help our professions within our limited abilities.

1. 1SGID MEMBERSHIP SCHEME

2. 1SGID FORUM BY SIDS

On top of our existing social media platforms, SIDS is creating 2 new discussion forums in LinkedIn and Facebook respectively named the “1SGID Forum by SIDS” to allow members to voice their problems, offer solutions, clarify various policies, discuss certain issues, finding employment and so on. We want to let you know that you are not alone in this and we can fight this pandemic together with an united spirit!

3. OPERATION MASK ON, MARCH ON

Face masks has become one of the essential items for this period of time. We understand the difficulty for some when it comes to procuring of the face masks at this point of time. SIDS has a limited stock of 3-ply surgical masks (box of 50 pieces each) for distribution to some of our professional members who need them. These are for our members for self use and to distribute to the project sites when they resume operations. It will be a first come first serve, while stocks last basis.

4. CoST INDEX

Working from Homes have become the new normal in this period of time. Even after the CB, full resumption of workforce may take awhile. Home becomes not just the place to rest but for working and learning as well. We, as interior design professions, have created an index called the Communal Stress Test (CoST) to help homeowners measure the “communal threshold” of their dwellings, helping them to understand the full potential of the home spaces to make communal living more enjoyable, if not, bearable at least. More information of the CoST index will be communicated through our campaigns and forums.

5. PROFESSIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Our Professional Enrichment program will continue to serve our community but will be transformed to an online mode instead. We will roll out a series of e-lectures featuring distinguished speakers who will share their expertises and experiences with our members. Another good news that we would like to share with regards to the upcoming World Interiors Day on the 23rd of May, SIDS intend to continue with the annual celebration via an e-symposium as well.

6. SOCIAL ENGAGEMENTS ACTIVITIES

With the implementation of social distancing measures, it seemed that all social and communal activities have to also take a hiatus. We in SIDS begs to differ as we realized creative minds cannot be “imprisoned” and has to find outlets to allow some form of interactions between the community. SIDS Social Engagement activities will resume from next month via our e-LaKopi sessions where members will be invited to join in to chit chat about their problems and possibly solutions to the current situation in a more casual but curated setting.

7. ID ACCREDITATION PROGRAM

Following through with the successful completion of the ID Accreditation Roundtable last month, the team in SIDS will take the lead to form the Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Advisory Committee (SIDAAC) and its extended focus groups. The 4 main stakeholder groups within SIDAAC will consist of the Government Agencies, Trade Associations, Education Institutions, and Practitioners’ Representatives. Amid the social distancing period, the team will continue to organize focus group e-meetings to continue with the work that lie s ahead. We welcome more individuals and firms to come forth if you want your voices to be heard and to contribute to this industry game-changing program.

8. GOVERNMENT SCHEMES

Last but not least, SIDS will also provide links on our website to the various government schemes that are relevant to the Interior Design professions.
